Hydrocarbon Chiller
Industry Segment
Customer
South East England
Background
A world leader pharmaceuticals and diagnostics, had a requirement to relocate some of their storage and distribution facility.
The refrigeration requirement included a new -22°C freezer and a new -4°C chill store for containing temperature sensitive diagnostic products
Short description of the solution
A “green” hydrocarbon chiller solution was offered with pumped secondary fluid circulated to air coolers and dry coolers.
Due to the high commercial value of the product stored, reliability was paramount for this installation. For this reason the design incorporated 100% spare capacity / standby equipment.
Hydrocarbon chillers are environmentally friendly and result in zero ozone depletion potential and negligible global warming potential.
Temper heat transfer fluid was selected as the ideal secondary refrigerant for this project. Temper is non-toxic, ecologically sound, readily biodegradable and non-flammable.
Two hydrocarbon chillers were installed providing chilled secondary refrigerant to the air coolers via supplied pump stations. Each chiller had a water cooled condenser piped to dry cooler. The layout was designed to be compact and located within one room on a mezzanine floor.
Two air coolers were installed within the freezer with electric defrost. The chill store contains four air coolers with off-cycle defrost.
